Germany Advocates for EU Digital Sovereignty Amid U.S. Tech Dominance Concerns
Germany is pushing for a stronger European digital infrastructure to achieve digital sovereignty without isolating itself from global markets. "We need to actively participate in this sector as players, not as customers," said Wildberger, emphasizing the need for Europe to compete in technology, innovation, and AI.
The MOVE comes as European unease grows over U.S. trade policies under President Trump, which have prompted searches for alternatives to American tech providers dominating cloud services and AI infrastructure. Wildberger highlighted European successes like Mistral AI, DeepL, and Aleph Alpha as proof of global competitiveness.
Despite U.S. leadership in AI, Wildberger stressed that digital sovereignty isn't protectionism. "We want to and must be accessible for the global market," he said, downplaying fears of disrupted transatlantic partnerships.
